Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced today that Kelly Herberholz, a science teacher from Macomb County, has won the 2025 Educator of the Year award. Along with the honor, she received a $10,000 prize from the Michigan Lottery’s Excellence in Education program.
“Congratulations to Kelly Herberholz for her well-deserved recognition,” said Governor Whitmer. “For over a decade, Kelly has inspired students at Dakota High School to love science and work together. She is also a strong leader who helps organize school events that connect students with the community. Educators like Kelly prepare the next generation and live by values we should all admire.”
Herberholz, 34, has taught science for 12 years at Dakota High School, part of the Chippewa Valley Schools. She currently serves as an administrative team intern at the school.
“Education was the perfect career for me,” Herberholz said. “It lets me combine my passion for science, leadership, and serving the community. Growing up, I loved science and had great teachers who encouraged my curiosity. Being named Educator of the Year is an incredible honor. I owe this to my students who motivate me every day, and my wonderful colleagues who work hard for our students and families.”
Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli recently presented Herberholz with the award.
“Kelly is a beloved teacher at Dakota High,” Shkreli said. “The emotion in the room when she received the award showed how much she means to her students and colleagues. Coming from a family of educators, Kelly has a true passion for preparing students for life beyond school. She truly deserves this honor.”
Dakota High School Principal Kevin Koskos praised Herberholz’s impact on the school. “Kelly’s contribution over the past 12 years is hard to fully capture. She is a great role model for both students and staff.”
