Powerball officials are urging players to check their tickets as one lucky winner in Colorado has just hours left to claim a $2 million prize.
The winning ticket was purchased in December at the Safeway Fuel Mini C-2612 in Aurora, a Denver suburb. The player matched five numbers and activated the Power Play option, which doubled their prize to $2 million.
However, the prize will be forfeited if not claimed by today, with the money returning to the Colorado Lottery’s proceeds fund. Colorado Lottery officials noted that many prizes, especially smaller ones, go unclaimed each year. “If a large prize is about to expire, we alert the media and post on our social media channels in hopes of finding the rightful winner,” they stated on their website.
In addition to the Colorado prize, another unclaimed Powerball prize from a December 16 drawing is also expiring today. A player in Louisiana purchased a ticket at Meraux Food Store in Chalmette and won $50,000 by matching four white balls. If the player had opted for the Power Play feature, their prize would have doubled to $100,000.
Another large unclaimed prize is a $1.1 million Powerball ticket from a drawing held on September 8, 2024, in Chicago. The winner has until December to claim their prize.
In contrast, a Minnesota player has already claimed a $276,186 North 5 prize won on May 31, 2024. The Corner Store, where the ticket was sold, will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
As the clock ticks down, lottery players are reminded to check their tickets, as time is running out for some to claim their winnings.
