ARTESIA, Calif. — A trip to the fish market turned into an unexpected windfall for a Los Angeles County man who won $47 million from a SuperLotto Plus ticket.
Fernando Diego visited Fresh Catch Seafood Market in Artesia in December and purchased the winning ticket. However, he didn’t immediately claim his prize.
“Winning the California Lottery can take some time,” said a lottery spokesperson. “Sometimes, larger prizes take longer to claim.”
Diego chose the lump sum option, receiving $22,568,890 before federal taxes.
Lottery ticket sales in California help fund public education. In 2024, more than $2 billion of the $9 billion raised went to public schools, according to the California Lottery.
