Mega Millions, one of the most popular lottery games in the U.S., will introduce major changes starting April 2025 to help players win bigger prizes.
Joshua Johnston, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Consortium, said the updates aim to excite both new and existing players. He added that the game expects more billion-dollar jackpots and more millionaires as the prize pools grow faster.
Since the last update in 2017, Mega Millions has made about three Americans millionaires each week. The lottery highlighted eight key improvements in the upcoming “mega overhaul.” Most notably, players will have better odds of winning the jackpot, which currently stands at about one in 302 million.
Jackpots will start larger and grow faster, offering more chances for big wins. A new built-in multiplier will apply to every non-jackpot prize, multiplying winnings by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or even 10X.Players who match all five white balls will now be able to win up to $10 million.
Another major change is that there will be no more “breakeven prizes.” Every win will be worth more than the ticket cost. However, the ticket price will increase from $2 to $5 per play, marking the first price rise since the game launched in 2002.
Despite the higher cost, Mega Millions hopes the improved prizes and odds will attract more players to keep trying their luck.
