California Lottery Player Wins $47K in Mega Millions Drawing

by Nancy

A Mega Millions ticket sold in Napa, California, earned a lucky player $47,355 in the Friday, May 23 drawing—just shy of the $154 million jackpot, according to lottery officials.

The ticket matched four white balls, the Mega Ball, and included a 5x Megaplier, significantly boosting the prize amount. It was sold at a Lucky California supermarket, located about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco, the California Lottery confirmed in an email to McClatchy News.

Although no one won the top prize, the jackpot has now increased to an estimated $173 million, with a cash option of approximately $75.7 million, for the next draw on Tuesday, May 27.

The winning numbers for Friday’s draw were 7, 18, 40, 55, and 68, with a Mega Ball of 18.

More than 215,000 other tickets across the country also won prizes, ranging from $10 to $50,000, the lottery said.

The Mega Millions jackpot was last claimed on April 18 by a player in Ohio, who took home $112 million.

To win the Mega Millions jackpot, players must match all five white balls plus the gold Mega Ball. The odds of hitting the jackpot are approximately 1 in 290 million. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased up to draw time, which varies by state.

Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. ET and can be streamed online. The game is available in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
