A Powerball ticket worth $100,000 remains unclaimed in South Carolina, prompting lottery officials to urge players to double-check their tickets.
The winning ticket was purchased for just $2 at a Circle K gas station in Charleston ahead of the April 2 drawing, according to ABC affiliate WCIV-TV. The player matched enough numbers to win the six-figure prize but narrowly missed out on the $31 million jackpot by just one number.
Because the ticket was bought in South Carolina, the winner has less than 180 days from the draw date to claim the prize. Officials are encouraging the ticket holder to come forward as soon as possible to avoid missing out.
While $100,000 is a significant win, the final payout will be reduced by taxes. Winners of prizes over $5,000 must pay 24% in federal taxes, cutting around $25,000 from the total. Additionally, South Carolina imposes a state tax of at least 6.5%, further reducing the amount the winner will take home.
This unclaimed ticket is one of thousands still waiting to be claimed across the state. Officials revealed that more than 6,000 players in South Carolina are holding tickets worth between $4 and $100,000.
Claim periods vary by state. In most states, including South Carolina, players have 180 days to collect winnings. New York allows one year to claim, while California offers six months for most prizes—except for jackpots, which come with a full year to claim.
The Powerball jackpot has since rolled over and now stands at an estimated $47 million, as no one matched all five numbers in the latest draw.
