Oklahoma is planning a major overhaul of its lottery system, aiming to modernize how residents buy tickets and check results. The proposed changes include launching a digital lottery platform, known as “iLottery.” If approved by state lawmakers, Oklahoma would join 11 other U.S. states already offering this service online.
The initiative is intended to align with the rapidly changing gambling landscape and improve the overall user experience. The Oklahoma Lottery Commission hopes the upgrade will enhance its loyalty program and simplify how players use the lottery app in stores.
However, the push for digital access also raises concerns about gambling addiction. Wiley Harwell, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Association of Problem Gambling and Gaming, warned that increased accessibility could worsen addiction risks. He cited data showing that over 6% of Oklahomans already suffer from a gambling disorder, and one in four are at risk of developing one.
To address this, the iLottery platform would include a wellness component, featuring tools such as pop-up messages to encourage responsible play and guide users to support services. Harwell emphasized the need for clear safety guidelines, saying, “Most people who gamble in other ways also play the lottery. Making it more accessible online could increase addiction rates.”
He added, “We want people to know the risks, recognize if they have a problem, and seek help. Playing should always be safe.”
