A Powerball ticket sold at a Columbia gas station has earned its owner $50,000 after narrowly missing the grand prize in Saturday night’s Double Play drawing, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.
The winning ticket was purchased at Simba Express, a gas station and convenience store located at 2932 Alpine Road, near Cardinal Newman School and the junction of Interstates 77 and 20.
Though the ticket did not win the regular Powerball drawing, it matched four white balls and the red Powerball in the separate Double Play draw, lottery officials said in a news release on Monday. The winning Double Play numbers were 14, 23, 33, 38, 60, and the Powerball was 3.
The odds of matching that combination in a Double Play drawing are approximately 1 in 913,129. Double Play is an optional feature players can add to their Powerball ticket for an extra $1. It offers another chance to win, with a separate drawing and a top prize of $10 million. Double Play drawings occur on the same nights as Powerball—Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays—just after the main draw.
The winner has 180 days from the draw date to claim the $50,000 prize. South Carolina allows winners to remain anonymous, offering them privacy if they choose.
Lottery officials advised the winner to sign the back of the ticket and store it in a safe place until ready to claim the prize. Once claimed, the Simba Express retailer will receive a bonus for selling the winning ticket.
With no winner for Saturday’s main Powerball jackpot, the prize has climbed to $54 million for Monday night’s draw. Tickets cost $2 and must be purchased by 9:59 p.m. ahead of the 10:59 p.m. drawing. The odds of winning the jackpot are about 1 in 293 million.
